Gum disease is the result of bacteria and plaque buildup around the gumline. In the disease’s earliest stages of development, it’s possible for patients to not experience any noticeable symptoms. But when symptoms do start developing, bad breath is one that many experience. Other symptoms of gum disease include:

• Red, swollen, or tender gums
• Gums that bleed when brushed
• A receding gumline
• Loose teeth

If gum disease isn’t treated, it can cause tooth loss and even contribute to other kinds of health problems, like heart disease, Alzheimer’s, stroke, diabetes, and certain complications during pregnancy.

Why Are Straight Teeth Important?

There are at least two answers to this question. The first involves confidence. When you have a straight smile, you feel more confident about sharing it with others. And that’s what everyone wants–to feel confident enough to smile openly instead hiding teeth behind a closed-mouth smile.

Confidence is just one aspect, though. There’s an even more important reason that having straight teeth is important, and it goes back to your oral health. Put simply, straight teeth are easier to clean. Misaligned teeth, meanwhile, create places for bacteria and plaque to hide. And the more of both that you have in your smile, the more vulnerable you are to things like gum disease and tooth decay.
