New Year's Eve

There is no better time than now to start fresh with some more wholesome lifestyle choices. Whether you are looking to eat more vegetables, spend more time exercising, or sleep a full 8 hours a day, you are taking a step to improve your life. As for your oral health, there are all sorts of ways that you can improve. Here are some New Year’s resolutions that you can implement to work towards a healthier smile.

Attend Routine Dental Checkups

Even though regular cleanings and checkups are essential for optimal oral health, about one third of Americans don’t see a dentist as often as they should. Now would be a great time to give your dentist a call to book an appointment. Before you leave the practice, be sure to schedule your next appointment. This way, you will be back on track with regular visits.

Floss Daily

Brushing is effective at removing plaque and food particles from your teeth, there are some places that your toothbrush can’t quite reach. Flossing is necessary to remove bacteria from between the teeth and beneath the gumline. If you aren’t already in the habit of flossing every day, the new year is a great time to get started! Place your container of floss right next to your toothpaste. This way, you will see it every time you brush your teeth.

Give Up Smoking

Did you know that using tobacco products doubles your risk for gum disease? It is also linked to many other health issues, including oral cancer. This habit can be incredibly difficult to quit, so it’s important that you find healthier replacement activities for when the cravings kick in. Talk to your friends, family, and doctor about the best ways you can quit permanently.

Limit Your Sugar Intake

An occasional sugary treat doesn’t usually do too much harm, but if you are constantly consuming it throughout the day, this can increase your risk for tooth decay and other problems throughout your body. The best way to cut back on sugar is to reduce the number of sweet treats that you buy. Try to find something else that satisfies the craving. For instance, instead of a can of cola, try having a crisp bottle of sparkling water instead. Instead of a piece of hard candy, have a piece of sugarless gum.

Have Tooth-Healthy Snacks

Not all foods are harmful for your teeth. In fact, some are actually quite beneficial. Try adding some more tooth-healthy snacks to your diet. Dairy products are excellent for your teeth because they are high in calcium. Try adding some yogurt or a glass of milk to your breakfast. Cheese makes a great snack as well. Fibrous foods and vegetables like apples, pears, carrots, and celery help to stimulate saliva flow and clean your teeth. Instead of potato chips or crackers, have some nutrient-rich nuts.

Don’t leave your smile behind in the new year. By using the tips listed above, you can work towards a healthier smile in 2022!
