Do you find that when meeting new people, they tend to avoid your gaze or interact more with others than with you? Do people act nervous or unsure around you? If so, you may be unintentionally communicating that you do not want to engage. Everything from your smile to your body language speaks to the people around you. Read on for some helpful tips about ways you can become more approachable!

Facial Expressions

One of the first things we notice when meeting someone new is their smile, so show yours off! Smiling confidently lets others know that you are pleased to be meeting them. If you feel self-conscious about flaws like chipped or discolored teeth, you may want to contact your dentist about what cosmetic services they have to offer.

Also, establishing appropriate eye contact communicates respect and lets others know you are interested in interacting with them. Remember to avoid staring for long periods, though, as this can be a bit unnerving.

Body Language

How you carry yourself says a lot to the people around you, so be aware of your posture! Sitting upright with your hands to your sides may help people feel more comfortable and interested in approaching you.

Avoid crossing your arms or tilting your head too far back as this may come across as intimidating. Tilting your head too far down, however, may seem aloof. Instead, try to keep your face vertical and gaze straight forward. This is better for your posture and lets people know that you are open to interaction.

Avoid Distractions Or Covers

People tend to feel less comfortable making contact with someone if they cannot see their eyes or facial expression clearly. With this in mind, avoid anything that covers you up like sunglasses, hoodies, or scarves.

Remember, too, that if you’re looking down at a phone or other device that you are unable to look straight forward, smile, or establish eye contact. Set the distractions aside; you can always respond to that text message later!

Express Interest In Others

Expressing genuine curiosity about someone’s interests and hobbies helps to foster a meaningful connection that lets them know you care. Respond with positive remarks or by asking questions to further the conversation, and avoid off-putting or rude comments that might turn people away!

Ask a Friend

If you are not sure what your face or body language may be communicating, ask someone close to you that you trust what kind of impression you are making. They will notice behaviors or patterns that you might be unaware of, and hearing the truth from an honest friend can help clarify what can be improved on for the future.

These techniques will help you present your best and most confident self to the world. The next time you find yourself meeting someone new, you can use these tips to have a pleasant, authentic, and genuine exchange.
